Local's Guide to Summer Activities in Steamboat

What do WE like to do here..?

There can be no better perspective than that of a local, so here are a few staff picks on what’s best to do around the ‘Boat in the summer.

Take a peek at their favorite summer activities below.

Robin - Mountain Biking & Cycling

There’s a reason Steamboat is called Bike Town, USA ®. The minute the snow melts, Steamboat turns into a biking mecca for road and mountain bikers alike.  Moving Mountains owner/president Robin Craigen takes full advantage of the ever-expanding network of singletrack trails and the miles of quiet paved county road each spring, summer, and fall.

Kate - Biking with the Family

Kate, another Moving Mountains bike lover, takes to the trails at a more modest level.  Like many families, Kate enjoys biking (or walking) the Core Trail with her children.  The Core Trail is easy for everyone and offers excellent stopping points along the way, including the Yampa River, various playgrounds, and the relaxing Rotary Park.

Teresa - Fly Fishing

The gorgeous Yampa Valley is known for offering world-class fishing in its rivers, as well as in pristine mountain lakes where she catches and releases beautiful rainbow trout. Area lakes to try include Steamboat Lake, Stagecoach Reservoir, and Pearl Lake.  Talk to a local guide and they will direct you to the best locations and can share what is hatching and what flies are attracting the fish in the area at that time.

Garder - Exploring & Playing Along the Yampa River

The Yampa River becomes a playground in the summer.  Offering various “beaches” in town (areas where kiddos can play), the river is a local and visitors’ favorite attraction. Tubing the river is a summer favorite. General Manager Gardner takes his kids down as often as he gets the chance. Tubing not your cup of tea?  Take a refreshing dip in the ‘C’ hole near to the library at 13th street for an invigorating experience.

Andrea - Steamboat Pro Rodeo

On Friday and Saturday nights during the summer the Steamboat Pro Rodeo is a unique attraction for our mountain town and tips its hat to the ranching heritage of the Yampa Valley and Routt County.  It’s rare to get a professional rodeo in a smaller mountain town, let alone one that happens almost every weekend. All events are fun for the family especially the mutton busters event where kids are invited to participate - it’s a must-see!
