For those that still seek a thrill, you can try one of the many sledding hills or give snowmobiling a try and take a guided tour and learn about Breckenridge’s mining history and local wildlife. Go For Gold - Breckenridge's Mining History
In 1859, prospectors came to Summit County looking for gold, and Breckenridge was established during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Because of this rich history of gold mining in Breckenridge, there are still remnants of old mining cabins, outposts, and mines still around the area today. The town was eventually transformed into the ski and mountain town it is known as today but you will uncover many treasures that still linger around the area today
You can take a tour of some of these old mines and outposts and even go more than 1000 feet deep into the town’s most famous mine, Country Boy Mine. Learn how to pan for gold or about the rich history of mining in the county that has made Breckenridge what it is today. Original hydraulic mining equipment are still in place as well at the Lomax Mine where you can feel what the prospectors felt and step into an old miner’s cabin.
If you’re up for more of an adventure, there are many trails around Breckenridge that will take you around abandoned mines and blacksmith displays. You’ll get a chance to marvel at Breckenridge times gone by along with the amazing landscapes that surround the town and the popular wildflowers. If you come during the fall, you’ll also get a chance to see the vibrant colors of the aspen trees that surround Breckenridge and Summit County. Some of the best hikes happen during the fall because of the comfortable temperatures, bright colors, and historic sights.

The Breckenridge Arts District was established in 2001 and was quickly developed into one of the main fixtures of the town. It is comprised of buildings near the corner of South Ridge Street and Washington Avenue. These buildings are historically significant and artists work and host many workshops in these establishments. From ceramics and drawing to metalsmithing and textiles, you’ll find plenty of ways to carve your niche in the art scene. Breckenridge Creative Arts (BreckCreate) promotes art, culture, and creativity in Breckenridge to ensure unique experiences and innovations for years to come.
You can also check out local shows at the Riverwalk Center, an indoor amphitheater that hosts live music, film festivals, and plenty of other great events year-round. There are plenty of museums and historical tours to enjoy in the area as well including haunted tours that are especially fun around Halloween.
