Colorado Winter Fun off the Slopes

Believe it or not, there is more to do than just skiing and snowboarding in the mountains in winter (gasp!). On your day off from the slopes, try another unforgettable adventure with the many other offerings in the Breckenridge, Vail and Steamboat Valleys. From hot springs to skating and snow tubing, we have plenty of options to keep you entertained off the slopes.

Here's some of our top picks for other winter adventures:

Snow Tubing

A favorite for kids and thrill seeking parents, tubing is a must. Slide down snow-covered hills on an inner tube. A lift will transport you to the top of the hill and all you have to do is point your tube down the hill. This is a fun activity in Breckenridge, Steamboat or the Vail Valley that is for kids and adults. Need more thrill? Try extreme sledding. Take the sledding experience you?ve loved as a kid and amplify it to the extreme during this thrilling outdoor adventure. Feel the rush!

Ice Skating

There's nothing more iconic than twirling around on skates at an outdoor ice rink. There are several picturesque outdoor ice skating rinks open this season for you to enjoy in the Vail and Beaver Creek areas; Maggie's Pond in Breckenridge or the new Skeeter's Ice Rink, a centerpiece of the improvements at Steamboat Square in the Steamboat base area. Skate rentals available.

Snow Biking

Winter snow doesn't stop biking enthusiasts in the mountains. Fat biking has grown in popularity- named after the 'fat', wide tires on the bikes that allow you to float on the snow and enjoy a good workout. Rentals are available in Steamboat, Breckenridge, Vail and Beaver Creek. Bring plenty of water and dress in layers- even when it's cold, biking can make you hot. Wearing a backpack is ideal to store extra layers, snacks and supplies.

Snowmobiling

There?s more than one way to dash through the snow in the mountains and snowmobiling is always a favorite off-mountain activity. Steamboat, Breck and the Vail Valley offer thousands of acres, groomed trails, tree-lined meadows and open space offer plenty of room for high-powered playtime. Numerous options for all ages and abilities.

Sleigh Rides

Enjoy an afternoon hot cocoa or evening ride wrapped in a blanket, listening to the jingle of a horse drawn sleigh, the crisp mountain air and beautiful mountain views. It doesn't get more storybook than this!

Winter Fishing

Combine your passions for snow and fishing with some fly fishing or ice fishing. Fishing is a year round enjoyment here - so dont be afraid to wet the line with some winter flyfishing, or cozy up in an ice hut on one of many lakes around, where the fish are very much active in winter.

Ice Climbing

Did you know that Vail is world-renowned for its ice and mixed climbing areas? For the true thrill seekers, check out the ice climbing adventures around Vail and Breckenridge. Adventurous souls can climb a frozen waterfall with a certified guide in a spectacular setting. It's not for the faint of heart, but no prior experience is required. It?s an exhilarating way to spend the day in the mountains!

Hot Springs Soaking

If adventure seeking doen't get you to the mountains, then hot springs soaking will. For a beautiful and rustic experience, make a reservation at the famous Strawberry Park Hot Springs in Steamboat, an open air natural hot pool experience you won't forget.

Who doesn?t love a water slide? At Old Town Hot Springs in Steamboat, kids and parents can enjoy two twisting 230-foot slides, each one landing in a 100-degree natural mineral spring pool.  Afterwards, soak and relax in one of the many natural hot spring pools. An iconic piece of Steamboat history,  the pools have been here for over 100 years, enjoyed by the Native American Ute Indians who first settled the area.
