Recognition Beyond Compare from Outside Magazine and Best of the Boat!

Moving Mountains Best Place to work

We’re proud to say that not only do we move mountains for our guests, but we also move mountains for our employees and our community, too.
 Outside Best Places to Work

Recently, Moving Mountains was recognized by Outside Magazine as being one of the 100 Best Places to Work in the USA in 2019. In the same week, we were also voted a Best of the Boat winner by Steamboat Pilot and Today readers.

In the 21 years we’ve been in business, our company has grown beyond recognition, but our commitment to being not only an exceptional place to stay but also an exceptional place to work has never wavered.

The Outside Magazine recognition is a feat in and of itself. The roundup of best workplaces included tech startups in San Francisco and Boulder and the companies spanned East to West.

What makes this award even more rewarding for us is that it’s a reflection of true employee satisfaction, not just those over-the-top media-worthy job perks. We could add that hospitality is not an easy industry to work in compared to some of the others that were highlighted in the article.

As a small family-owned business we feel as if we are walking amongst Giants. Unlike trendy tech start-ups who have daily ping pong tournaments, electric guitar, piano and drumsets for impromptu jam sessions, or beer on tap we approach this from our direction in a way that speaks to the relationship business we see ourselves in.

We focus on what matters, building strong relationships and having fun while working together.

We welcome our first-year staff members in the same way we love to welcome our guests, with a catered lunch for the whole staff. We have 5:01 beer happy hours at selected homes we manage so that we can get that real guest feel for where our guests get to stay (Yes, this is as described - you should have a beer in your hand by 5:01 pm to fully participate!). We also host luxury catered chalet practice dinners at our chalets because the experience has to be seen (and tasted) to be believed.

Our team building and end-of-season celebrations include snowmobiling, bowling parties or staff socials watching the sunset from the deck of one of our amazing vacation rental homes.

Of course, we subscribe to flexible work schedules wherever possible, so that does include the infamous “powder clause” on occasion. What better inspiration to sell a ski vacation than a first hand “product testing” report after a big powder morning on the ski hill?

The big 6 pillars of our work philosophy aren’t written in a handbook sitting in a dusty desk drawer somewhere, our culture is painted in purple across the walls of our headquarters where everyone can live, eat and breathe it.

Not only do we strive to make a difference for our guests and our employees, but, as a company, we strive to make a difference in our community.

Every employee gets 8 hours of paid volunteer time and, collectively, we donate a significant portion of our budget (over $20,000 annually) to support community nonprofits and events that we believe in. Past recipients have been: REPS (Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide), Trails Alliance, YES Golf, YPN (Young Professionals Network), United Way, STARS (Steamboat Adaptive Recreation), Strings in the Mountains music festival, Lift Up, RMYC (Rocky Mountain Youth Corp), Advocates Against Battering and Abuse, and Partners (big brothers/big sisters program) of Routt County.

Who knew that giving back could be as enticing of a job perk as on-site food trucks or weekly ax-throwing that the other Outside Magazine winners offer to employees?

We did! Because Moving Mountains is a different kind of company with exceptional people who work hard, play hard, value our guests, and give back to our community.  It speaks to where we are based - in small mountain communities where it takes 30 minutes longer at the grocery store because you’ll probably run into someone you know. We care about each other and we support each other and we have been rewarded many times over for caring about our community when they send new homeowners and guests our way, knowing that we show up when it counts.

Thank you to our incredible staff for garnering not only one but two outstanding awards last week. We couldn’t be more proud to move mountains with you!
