Kayaking
We work with Barry Smith and his Mountain Sports Kayak School located in the Ski Haus Store. The Mountain Sports Kayak School has been serving northwest Colorado with top quality kayak instruction since 1980.
Barry Smith has been exploring rivers and canyons most of his life. He has been featured in magazines and on "National Geographic Explorer" kayaking the Grand Canyon of the Colorado and the Hvita River Gorge in Iceland. He is also the Chief Nordic Examiner for the Rocky Mountain Region and is a former member of the U.S. Demonstration Team.
Barry's knowledge and patience along with his excellent ability to coach and instruct will greatly enhance your kayaking experience.
The Courses:
Never Ever Classes: $65 - 3hr
The most popular program is the half day Never-Ever class. This program is structured for those who have never kayaked before. The session begins in our shop with fitting of life jackets and helmets. Then it's off to the ponds where you are fitted with boats, learn the basic paddle strokes, boat control, and safety. Once everyone is feeling comfortable with their boats the group floats onto a very gentle stretch of the Yampa River. The rest of the three hour session is devoted to learning river navigation and having fun dealing with the currents.
Intermediate / Advanced Classes: $65 - 3hr
This course is designed to tune up and improve your kayak skills. Surfing waves, hole riding, squirt moves, eddy turns, rolling, and running slalom gates are all covered. Half day to five day classes are offered.
Also offered:
3 Day "Learn to Kayak" Class: $150
