Biking the 'Boat

What happens in Ski Town USA when the snow melts? Ask a local and many will tell you that we become "Bike Town USA". Road riders cycle year-round here. For mountain bikers the first trails are usually dry by the beginning of May (Hot Springs / Mad Creek / Lower Bear) and by Memorial Day Howelson Hill and Emerald Mountain are dry enough to host the local Town Challenge Mountain Bike Race series opener.

Moab and Fruita are the biking meccas that we all enjoy in the spring while the bike trails are still buried under the snow. Right around the time that it gets too hot to ride down there the Steamboat biking season kicks off. From May to October riders can enjoyed varied trails and terrain in all directions with perfect cycling temperatures almost every day.

Steamboat's biking community is very active in trail development and cycling advocacy. Visit the Routt County Riders website for information on club activities, local road and mountain bike group rides (anyone can join in), and sign up for their free email newsletters.

If you have the desire to compete for 24 hours on a mountain bike you could always sign up for the 24 Hours of Steamboat bike race which will run June 10th - 11th starting and finishing at noon.
